The town of Llandudno offers holidaymakers plenty of things to see and do and with The Imperial Hotel having a central position on the sweeping promenade, the beauty of staying at this four star luxury hotel is that it can all be discovered on foot.
Many attractions can be found on the Great Orme, which at 350 million years old is the oldest tourist attraction in town! This spectacular limestone headland rises 679 feet above sea level and is home to native and rare flora, over 400 different types, and fauna including a herd of Kashmiri Goats which is why it has Special Area of Conservation (SAC). On a clear day the Summit offers views of Snowdonia, Liverpool Bay, the Menai Strait across to Anglesey, the Isle of Man and even the Lake District.
You can reach the summit of the Great Orme with the Llandudno Cable Car which is the longest cable car lift in the country rising to a height of 651ft above sea level or the Great Orme Tramway which is Britain’s only cable-hauled street Tramway. You can also hire a bike nearby and can chosen from a range of non-electric hybrid bikes with plenty of gears, easy-to-ride town bikes and electric bikes if you want a bit of extra pedal power to get you up to the top! There are also several paths to walk up and around the Great Orme which take you past some of the 400 historical sites including a ruined abbey which was home to Monks over 500 years ago, a Roman Well and the Copper Mines. At the Summit you’ll find the Visitor Centre which is open daily from March to October, as well as a café for a well-deserved rest.
The Great Orme Bronze Age Copper Mines are one of the most astounding archaeological discoveries of recent times and thought to be the largest prehistoric mine discovered in the world. Dating back 4,000 years to the Bronze Age, you can go underground to discover tunnels and learn how the ancient people of Britain lived before the Roman invasion.
The Great Orme is also home to Llandudno Snowsports Centre where you can ski or snowboard down the two “perma-snow” slopes or spin around in the crazy Sno tubes. Ride the Cresta Toboggan Run or test your skill on the UK’s only Alpine Adventure golf course. This in itself offers an action-packed day out.
Once you head down the Great Orme, Llandudno Pier has to be your next stop. Stretching 2,295 feet over the sea, this traditional seaside pier dating back to the late 1800s is the longest in Wales and one of the UK’s finest. With Grade II listed status, it’s part way through a massive refurbishment programme which has seen new kiosks and the installation of family entertainment centres with modern and traditional games, as well as an array of shops. On the Promenade opposite the entrance to the Pier you’ll find a traditional Punch and Judy show which continues to be a favourite for children and adults with three shows a day during peak season.
At the other end of the sweeping bay towards the Little Orme is Bodafon Farm Park, another firm favourite for families especially kids who love the farmer’s tractor trailer rides. As well as traditional farm animals you’ll also see llamas, deer, rhea and rare breed cows and a variety of owls and birds of prey. There are ponies to ride, the opportunity to hand feed some of the animals, children’s tractor rides and an adventure play area, and with free entry this is another great day out for all ages.
Around Llandudno you’ll find a series of wooden figures from the Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass stories. The town’s connection with the books stem from Alice Liddell, the young girl who inspired Lewis Carroll to write the famous tales, spending many holidays in the resort. There’s an app-driven Alice trail you can follow to take you to the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit.
Wales’ leading contemporary art Gallery and visual arts centre, Mostyn Gallery is a three minute walk from the hotel and with four exhibitions on this Summer it’s worth paying a visit, along with the Home Front Museum. This unique living history museum takes you back to life in 1940s Britain allowing you to explore 6 years of war on the home front captured in shops, room displays and tableaux.
And if that’s not enough, Llandudno also boasts two beaches. Take a boat trip around the Great and Little Ormes from North Shore or head out to sandy West Shore for a traditional day out on the beach whether it be to sit in a deckchair, build sandcastles, fly a kite or play beach games.
